Green Bay made the Vikings almost look like legitimate contenders and were unable to cover the manageable spread the line makers had instilled. The Steelers easily took down Arizona on the road and are a team that seems to be picking up steam as the season progresses. Oakland struggled mightily against the resurgent Kansas City Chiefs and if they are unable to find a way to solve their problems at quarterback, their promising season may be heading down the tubes real quick. I am very excited about this week’s prospects and I am fully expecting my ATS record to finally get above .500 on the season. The Redskins enjoyed a great start to the season, winning three out of their first four games, but have been on a downward trajectory as of late dropping their last three. Rex Grossman has been benched by Coach Shanahan in favor of John Beck, who is 0 6 as a starter in the NFL. Though Grossman is far from the ideal QB, Beck isn’t any better and he has a track record that speaks for itself. I believe Shanahan’s impatience with Rex’s progress is going to ultimately ruin any chance the Redskins have to put together a respectable season. Beck threw two interceptions last week against Buffalo and was sacked ten times, which is a new franchise record. Things won’t get much easier for Beck and crew this week when they take on the high flying 49ers who boast one of the most overpowering and stingy defenses in the NFL, as well as one of the most productive offenses around. San Francisco is averaging nearly 27 points per game, while Washington is only managing 16. The Redskins offense is also giving up 4 points more a game than the 49ers. At least statistically, the 49ers could easily beat Washington by about two touchdowns as long as both teams play to their current average level. I believe Beck will struggle again this week to get his offense productive and will have no ability to keep up with Alex Smith. 24, Washington 19. However, Pittsburgh has rallied quite nicely since then and now owns the best record in their division. Baltimore has looked inconsistent as of late and will need to be firing on all cylinders if they want to hang with the Steelers. Their loss against Jacksonville was humiliating and their win over Arizona was ugly and indicative of a team that currently has a hard time putting together a consistent effort through all four quarters. The Ravens and Steelers both sport defenses that are strong, talented and ruthless. They are about as evenly matched in this respect as you will ever find in the NFL. This will be a very defense centered game and I believe the winner will be decided by the turnover margin. Baltimore has had trouble protecting the ball as well as providing Flacco with enough time in the pocket in order to be effective. The Ravens have had 13 turnovers since the start of the season, 10 of which were directly caused by Flacco. I just don’t see Baltimore coming into this game with the level of intensity that the Steelers are sure to bring. Not too mention that Big Ben is 7 1 all time against Baltimore at Heinz Field. This should be a pretty decent game, but I still believe the Steelers will easily cover this tiny spread. However, the Jets will face a very evenly matched team this week when they visit the Buffalo Bills. Both teams have very comparable stats on both side of the ball, but I believe the Bills will come into this game more prepared and fluid than the Jets who are coming off of their bye week. Rex Ryan’s Jets are 0 2 after their bye week and are going to have to try and reverse that trend on the road at one of the tougher places to pull out a win as a visitor. This should be a competitive game, but I firmly believe the Bills will pull away either in the 3rd or 4th quarters and never look back.
